It's gettin' hot up here
Truckee
You wanted it. You asked for it.
...Now it's here.
Or, more explicitly, they're here.
With temperatures in the greater Sacramento area slated to hit record-setting highs this weekend through next week, and inland Bay Area mercury rising well past the three-digit mark (with health hazard warnings already posted), there's only one clear respite for the heat-weary: Tahoe.
While the air turns e'er warmer and dry and dust on the trails is starting to kick, the Tahoe Basin will greet an estimated 500,000-plus visitors over the next two weeks with temperatures in the balmy, but bearable low- to mid-80s.
The warm weather is the result of a high-pressure system off the coast that prevents cooler breezes from coming inland (start of El Nino).
...But get up here quick, Bay Area and Sac residents are advised to minimize driving.
Here's what to expect this weekend and beyond:
Saturday and Sunday: Highs topping at 88 degrees in Truckee, Tahoe City and SLT; if you're doing XTERRA Tahoe City or the Western States... key word is: hydration. Even locals who've trained at altitude can expect super-fatigue from the mercury spiking 15 degrees over night.Next week on into 4th of July Weekend: "Temperatures will continue above normal through extended," said National Weather Service Reno office meteorologist Brian O'Har. "Afternoon temperature will be in the 90s near 100 in Western Nevada with readings in teh 80s in the Sierra."
High pressure will continue to bring clear skies and heat through the 4th, O'Hara said.
