TT sits down with - Truckee single-speed guru Snover Part II

By A. Pridgen -

Truckee's Conrad Snover is a single-speed ambassador, organizing member of CWC racing, part-time roadie and apt to throw down 100-mile mtb rides on weekends when no one's looking. ...In his spare time, he works full-time just like you and me... only, true to form, much more efficiently. Here's part II of Tahoeticker's recent sit down with Snover; click here for part I.

Tahoeticker: Onto Nevada City. You punished your body for three days at TdN yet found enough in the tank to ride with the pros at the NC Classic — tell us about it.

Conrad Snover: The TdN was an important opportunity to provide exposure for our team and our sponsors, especially the local ones: Wild Cherries, Cyclepaths, Start Haus, and Oakley. This was our first year and we feel good about what we accomplished. While I did my best to manage and meter my effort, I dug pretty deep to have good finishes at Truckee and Northstar (and hung on for dear life in Reno).

CS cont'd: These three days of hard racing took a toll on me. At Nevada City on Sunday, I had barely enough left in the tank to line up with the Astana team: Lance, Levi and Chris Horner, then chase them around the course for a few laps, but that was it.

TT: ...And the obvious question: What was it like to be in the peloton chasing Levi and Lance?!

CS: In one word: Unbelievable.

To witness the event was an opportunity 20,000 fans didn’t want to miss. Regardless of my fitness or energy level, there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to be a participant.

Each side of the street was packed deep with 5-10 rows of cheering fans.

The crowd was loud as we lined up, but it became absolute pandemonium when Lance, Levi and Chris rolled up.

CS cont'd: The entire group stayed together riding 15 wide on the first, neutral parade lap designed for the fans to see everyone together. The instant the pace moto pulled aside, the attacks began and blew the race wide open. The group immediately stretched out into a long line.

After about 7 laps, the race officials decided to thin things out, and pulled the back half of the field off the course, which included me.

It was a great experience to watch the rest of the race, though of course I’d rather have ridden it!

TT: Let's look ahead — give us a preview of Downieville...

CS: Downieville is the best mountain bike race around. The race itself is epic, with the cross-country on Saturday and downhill on Sunday. Our team will be doing our best to defend the singlespeed and pro-geared cross-country titles we won last year.

CS cont'd: The weekend includes other fun events for everyone: a bike-jump contest into the river on Saturday afternoon, a “pixie-cross” race where big kids ride little kids’ bikes, then a huge party late into the night on the closed streets of downtown.

TT: 'K, we'll wrap now — what’s on the calendar for the rest of the summer?!

CS: Several team members will be racing in the Tahoe-Sierra 100 (a 100 mile MTB race out of Soda Springs), the Race Around Lake Tahoe and several official and ‘underground’ road and mountain bike races throughout the area.

Towards the end of the summer we’ll be active in advocacy and trail building in the Truckee area.

Check out the schedule on our Web site.

TT: Plug time: Anything we should know about team CWC Racing?!

CS: Our team and sponsors (www.cwcracing.org) are focused on celebrating all aspects of cycling and racing. All of us race on the road, most of us race on the dirt, and half race singlespeed.

I like to think that our interests are representative of the typical athletic-minded Truckee resident, embracing both road and mountain biking. Check out our website to see where we’ll be, if you want to carpool to a race, or if you are looking for a training riding partner.
