TT sits down with - Truckee single-speed guru Conrad Snover

By A. Pridgen -

Truckee

Truckee's Conrad Snover is a single-speed ambassador, organizing member of CWC racing, part-time roadie and apt to throw down 100-mile mtb rides on weekends when no one's looking. ...In his spare time, he works full-time just like you and me... only, true to form, much more efficiently. Here's part I of Tahoeticker's recent sit down with Snover:

Tahoeticker: Clearly, the entire weekend for TdN we're following the pros... namely Gerlach and Nash — it was a special year on that level for sure - what was your take?!

Conrad Snover: Gerlach and Nash are world class athletes with amazing stories. By now, most people know that Chad raced with Lance before becoming a homeless drug addict. To hear of his recent recovery back to pro bike racing is incredible.

CS cont'd: To watch him dominate the downtown Truckee crit on Thursday night with such authority and lap the pro field puts it in a whole new perspective. Katerina Nash is a local Truckee resident who races pro for Luna, is a 3x Olympian (2x nordic skiing, 1x mountain biking) and Czech national champion (mountain bike) yet is so understated and modest that many locals haven’t even heard of her.

For her to jump into the occasional road race for fun, then be able to win in Reno, earn 2nd overall in the TdN, and 3rd at Nevada City is terrific. These two athletes are an entirely different breed, and its great fun to watch them race.

TT: There are so many masters riders (like you) who don't get any money or glory for these events, yet you guys are throwing the 'ham' down for three days straight. Do you ever say to yourself — 'why am I doing this?!'

CS: Interesting question. While I absolutely love riding and racing my bike, I do sometimes question the time I spend on long drives to races in the middle of nowhere. In addition, since I work full-time and long hours, I don’t have the same time to train that many of my competitors do, which can make it hard to stay in shape.

Racing is hard enough; it’s no fun to be out of shape.

However, we’re extremely fortunate to live in Northern California where there are a number of epic events including Sea Otter, Downieville, Tour de Nez, and Nevada City Classic.

It’s an entirely different experience to participate in these events that do such a great job of creating a true community experience that celebrates cycling.

TT: You're not a roadie — in fact, as a single-speed racer you're probably about as far from the traditional shaved legs and Lycra crowd as you can get. Tell us about 72 hours of road racing vs. say, the single-speed world championships (SSWC).

CS: Bike racing is bike racing; the differences in those two events are mostly on the surface. At the end of the day, each group is there for the same core reason, because they enjoy riding and racing bikes, and the trick is to cut through the attitude and make sure to focus on having fun.

SSWC has a casual/social atmosphere of cross-dressing and costumes, but the top 20-30 racers are very focused on winning. Road events are typically more serious and intense, but as we saw in Nevada City, racers were taking pictures of themselves racing against Lance and getting his autograph on the start line.

Look for Part II Friday Snover will talk Lance, 'underground' races and team CWC
