No snow in Vancouver ...means Basin Olympians stick close to home

Staff Report -

Truckee

Those who stuck around Squaw this weekend saw Olympic Valley's Golden Girl Julia Mancuso making some practice downhill turns; folks sipping on a pint of hefeweisen at the Judah Lodge may have caught Errol Kerr heading up to Sugar Bowl's Ski Cross course ...and those shakin' to the beat at the Divided Sky Friday may have seen Hannah Teter stop by.

Though some Basin athletes, including three-time Olympian Shannon Bahrke, have made the way to Vancouver, other ski and snowboard team members have headed to training facilities in Park City and the Basin to get their turns in while Olympic officials and crews work round the clock making snow, trucking in snow ...and yes, flying in snow.

Bahrke said the moguls course, one of the few venues ready to go and one of the first events after the Friday Opening Ceremonies, said there's enough snow to train on.

Other Olympians and coaches are watching closely how the mogul skiers do with a thin layer of trucked-in snow.

"We've had all these people say, 'Omigosh, there's no snow, what can you do if you can't train?'" Bahrke, a silver medalist from the '02 games said of training sessions on snow-starved Cypress Mountain.

In the meantime, skiers like Truckee's Daron Rahlves who will compete against Kerr (skiing for Jamiaca) have time on their side as skicross — one of the last events of the games — is on Feb. 21.

For some, like Rahlves, who dislocated his hip at last month's Winter XGames in Aspen, will use the time to heal; and for Mancuso — who said getting a little family time from her Squaw peeps doesn't hurt either.

But for those who are going to be on the world's stage first, snow or no snow — they're all about BC (which expecting flurries this weekend).

"We're going up there to train ....and we hope to get as many training days as we can,"Bahrke said.
