Hammerel makes it back-to-back Vertical Challenges

By Kayla Anderson -

Incline Village

It was a beautiful day for Diamond Peak’s 4th Annual Vertical Challenge held March 7, 2009. Participants registered for the event bright and early and hit the slopes by 9:00 am, trying to fit as many runs as they could in a seven-hour period. Everyone skied/ rode laps and laps, staying hydrated while flying down the Crystal and Lakeview slopes.

The awards ceremony took place on the Base Lodge deck at 4:30 pm with Ben Fuller playing live music. Jim Hammerel won a 09/10 season pass in the Men’s division for skiing 84,246 vertical feet in one day, equal to about 16 miles of skiing. He completed 57 runs on Crystal.

Second place went to Geoff Woglum for skiing 76,720 vertical feet and third place went to Christopher Gentine for skiing 66,510 vertical feet. Honorable mentions go to our youngest competitor, 9-year-old Edward Parkhill, for skiing 53,072 vertical feet, and our oldest competitor who finished with 65,032 vertical feet, 65-year-old David Riley. Everyone who slid 50,000 vertical feet or more received a $50 discount on a 09/10 season pass.

Diamond Peak would like to thank everyone who participated in the 4th Annual Vertical Challenge and hope that next year’s will be bigger and better.
