Gettin' Hammereled

By Andrew Pridgen -

Incline

Chopping it up with the man who Saturday skied enough vertical feet to (ready?!) equal three descents down Everest on Saturday. You know him as Incline's newest owner of a Diamond Peak '09/'10 full pass — but his name's Jim Hammerel whose 57 laps (almost 85k vertical feet) on DP's Crystal Saturday earned hm back-to-back Vertical Challenge crowns:

tahoeticker: First off, 57 laps?!

Jim Hammerel:  Yeah, I had to beat my 54 from last year.

tt: So, doing so many laps — is it like being in ski prison?

jh: No way. Skiing is so awesome. I could do it all day if my legs would hold out.

tt: Big, sunny day Saturday — did you use Gapers as gates?

jh: Yeah, there were a ton of people out enjoying the good weather. It was tough avoiding people and trying not to scare people too much. You can never plan which way people are going to go.

tt: What kind of stuff did you do to keep your legs and mind fresh?!

jh: The legs were in much better shape than last year. I put the footrest bar down sometimes to give the quads a break. I played mental games to keep me focused and enegized ...stuff like chasing or beating someone to the lift, timing my runs and trying to beat the last one, counting how many chairs on the lift line I moved up, stuffed the headphones in and made small talk with fellow Diamond Peak riders, etc.

tt: Did you go enjoy a glass of wine up at the Snowflake Lodge after?!

jh: Nope. Last Tracks was sold out. I just had a beer at Crosby's with some friends.

tt: We feel like this event started as kind of a fun thing for the community — but now you're pushing 90k feet in a day ...could this catch on?!

jh: I hope so. Skiing is filled with speed events, but very few endurance events. I wish more resorts would catch on and offer races like this in a safe and fun way.

tt: You just skied more in a day than most do in a decade of seasons
combined; how do those legs feel?!

jh: They're actually not too bad. I was in much worse shape after last season's event. They're a bit stronger nowadays.

tt: So, the irony is you get a free pass to the place you probably don't want to ski again for a long, long time.

jh: Diamond Peak is great. It's convient and great for lunchtime runs. The passes are relatively expensive compared to Mt. Rose which is almost as close, so it's fun to have the option to ski at Diamond Peak, but not have to pay the high season pass price.

tt: So, you'll be back for a three-peat?!

jh: We'll see. My goal this year was 100k vertical. I might have barely made it had the chair not stopped or if I wasn't slowing down for people on the slopes. Hopefully next year Diamond Peak will cordon off a run just for competitors so we can really let 'em fly.

tt: Parting thoughts/shouts/support crew?!

jh: Thanks to the patroler who threatened to clip my pass for skiing too fast, but didn't (Wayne?). Thanks to my wife Nicci for binging me lunch on the chairlift. Sorry to all the people I cut in front of in line or on the hill.
