Alpine and Moment Skis team up for '09-'10 season
Alpine Meadows
Locals' hill/locals' skis. This week Alpine Meadows officials announced they'll drop some custom Reno-made Moment's in your quiver you when you buy an '09-'10 pass. Here's the down 'n dirty from Alpine's DOSM Deanna Gescheider.
Tahoeticker: We've been Moment fans for years — since (Moment founder) Casey Hakansson started out his garage in Galena! Did they approach you, or did you come up with the idea for the partnership?
Deanna Gescheider: A mutual friend of ours, David LaPlante, had the original idea. Moment was doing a demo at Alpine and I threw it out to Casey to see if the idea would stick and much to my surprise he said, “Let’s do it next season." Because of their out-of-the-box thinking we moved on this quickly and got the deal done.
DG cont'd: We both have similar brands in that we have great products, but we are up against the big guys. It takes different thinking on our part to compete with big budgets and known brands. Our lean companies provided us both the opportunity to cut through the red tape and get ‘er done. Knowing that both of our followers are loyalists, we are confident that they will be stoked on this cooperation and product.
TT: ...We were there for the tele comp (Freeskiing Championship) last season and you had a nice turnout. Former locals Corky Stills and Paige Brady — now living back up in Anchorage, AK —are both Moment riders; was this the 'a-ha Moment'?! Or has your work with the local ski manufacturer been a long-time coming?
DG: We certainly took notice that successful athletes were sporting the Moment ski and b/c Alpine Meadows is known as a tele-supportive mountain, once again the partnership made sense.
TT: So, did you work with the Moment guys (Luke Jacobson) on the design? Or did you just give them creative license?
DG: Alpine Meadows gave Luke access to our photo library and web site graphics in order to maintain our brand. Luke took the lead on maintaining the “Tahoe” ski line and directed us from the standpoint of what would sell. Moment is the expert in the ski business — we believe in letting them direct us in order to come up with something that will sell to many target markets and maintain both of our brand identities.
TT: Ski resorts, especially in this economy, are looking for the next big thing marketing-wise. Moment is a pretty ubiquituous 'core' brand. ...Do you see your skier base shifting more in the 'core' direction?
DG: We hope this partnership will attract new visitors to our mountain, while also hoping that it will interest our existing customer base. We also hope that our far-reaching database will help Moment expand their market share.
TT: Oh yeah, give us the dets on the Moment offer — or anything else special for winter '09-'10.
DG: Unfiltered Alpine/Homewood Pass:
• $1099 Adult Full + Moment Skis —Both mountains, no blackouts
• $799 without skis
Slightly Filtered Alpine/Homewood Pass:
• $849 Adult Full + Moment Skis — Both mountains, w/blackout dates
• $499 without skis
Alpine Midweek + Sunday Pass:
• $749 Adult Midweek + Moment skis, w/blackout dates
• $399 without skis
TT: ...And, we can't let you go w/out asking... A LOT of media (including this site) is jumping on the El Nino bandwagon. We know, you hear it every year that 'this winter is going to be the biggest ever'... But this year, there is a little science on your side. Are you guys snowdancing overtime?!
DG: Hell yes we are snow dancing! Our season pass offer with Moment skis was designed with this in mind. This is going to be the biggest snow year in 10 years and this is the year to get in the Moment … or better yet, on a pair!
TT: Thanks a bunch — anything else we didn't hit on — plug away here.
DG: New product:
• College Pass: $299*
• College Pass + Moment Skis $649 + El Nino = Best Damn Ski Year EVER!
* Driver's license/I.D and proof of a minimum of 9 class credits for the fall 2009 semester/quarter required at resort to receive pass. No photo copies or faxes accepted. Student's name must appear on class enrollment form. No exceptions.
