Eagles Nest renamed for Shane

Staff Report -

Squaw

In a fitting tribute to the man who cemented the precipitous pitch on the minds of skiers the world over, Squaw Valley has officially renamed the Eagle’s Nest on KT-22 McConkey’s.

The testpiece run is on the prominent towering rock buttress that looms large next to the top shack of the KT-22 chairlift.

Measured to be as steep as 68.5 degrees, the 300 ft pitch was one of Shane’s favorites as it held a short but wicked sweet adrenaline rush with relatively low consequences – by his standards anyway.

“I think it’s the perfect run to name after Shane,” said longtime friend and fellow Squaw freerider Jeremy Jones. “It’s the ultimate line on the best chairlift in the world and it looks over the whole valley."

McConkey’s spirit will be right at home a top the perch as a statue of his likeness will be installed on the edge of the run in a private ceremony.

Fans who wish to celebrate McConkey’s legacy don’t want to miss the premiere of Match Stick Production’s new ski movie “In Deep” which debuts this Saturday at Squaw Valley’s Olympic Valley Lodge. McConkey has the closing segment of the movie.

The premiere party will feature athlete appearances, prize giveaways, a Saucerboy costume contest and a special Shane Tribute Party with live music and antics celebrating Shane’s life.

There will be three showings of “In Deep” - 6 pm (doors 5 pm), 8 pm (doors 7:30 pm), and 10 pm (doors 9:30 pm) – with the 21 and up tribute party to follow.

Tickets: $10 at the door or in advance at Porters in Tahoe City and Truckee.
