Sinatra biopic closer to green light and DiCaprio ...North Shore and Cal Neva wait
Crystal Bay
Though it checked in with $40 mil. opening weekend Scorsese's Shutter Island seems as lackluster as his last three features The Departed, The Avaitor and Gangs of New York ...seems his man-crush on Leonardo DiCaprio (star of all four) continues.
Dicaprio this week told New York Magazine there are "no plans as of yet" (read: agents, contracts, schedule) for him to portray Ol' Blue Eyes ...but odds are if the film gets greenlit by year's end it'll be Martin's blue-eyed muse in front of the camera.
What, you may say, does this have to do with Tahoe?!
Um, everything.
Not since filming of the Godfather II* (no, The Bodyguard doesn't count ...much) has Tahoe been a go-to backdrop for a major feature.
*Yes, the cast and crew even stayed at the Cal Neva during production.
...While the Sinatra is biopic is going through its requisite paces in pre-production (rumored four scripts and more than a dozen writers), this one's personal for Scorsese who has made no bones about his love for The Chairman and has also gotten the family's (or is it The Family's) blessing — warts and all....The film, if early sneaks at the script(s) are accurate, will focus on Sinatra's life from 1960 (the Kennedy years) through 1988 (the Reagan years) with a heavy emphasis on his life in Palm Springs, Las Vegas (The Sands) and Lake Tahoe (Cal Neva).
The latter stateline-straddling casino, of course, being the first place Marilyn attempted suicide (she was rushed to Reno and revived); the spot where Frank ordered a sheriff killed (and succeeded) and the home of his $2 million Sinatra Showroom (still intact today).
...And you know how much Marty loves shooting in casinos.Tahoe not only serves as a suitable backdrop for Sinatra at his most unstable ('60-'63) but the Cal Neva could use a little love. Hell, Scorsese could rescue the whole shebang from the throes of foreclosure (current valuation somewhere south of $12 million) for less than it'd be to re-create the gaming floor and Circle Bar on a sound stage.
The only thing, at this point, that may save The Lady of the Lake is a little star power. So, finger's crossed Tahoe.
