The Ticker Insider

By A. Pridgen -

Every week, Tahoeticker presents the Tahoe Insider. News, notes and errata which don't necessarily merit making all the pesky phone calls it takes to create a well-crafted story. Feedback? Tips? Email us here. Click here for last week's TI:

Photo of the week: Lance, Lance, Lance. Props to photog/athlete Emma Garrard for her 'panning' skills.

Basin athlete of the week: Truckee's Katerina Nash — clear winner here. Nash's reputation as Ms. Versatile precedes her. ...Being a three-time Olympian and participating in both winter (XC skiing) and summer (mtb) games will do that to a reputation. Albeit, Nash, on the heels of a 'quiet' off-season when she decided to eschew the mtb world cup circuit in favor of keeping close to home with the USGP series (she's the current leader w/ Canadian Cyclocross coming up late-summer/fall), decided on a 'break' in her schedule to grease up the road bike and ride solo four-straight days — first the Tour de Nez and then a Sunday encore at the Nevada City Classic.

The result, overall second at TdN, including a stage win in front of her Alma Mater town crowd in Reno, and a third overall at the Nevada City Classic.

Again, no teammates, no help and not a lot of time on the road bike prior. "I was surprised," Nash said. "There's a lot more strategy a lot more games (on the road). But it was good — a fun weekend."

It's gettin' better all the time — maybe: With the 50-year storm rolling in this winter (and no, we're not just saying that) the West's mountain that resorts braved the winter of discontent that was '08-'09, may be seeing the turnaround ...starting late summer. Positive/negative stats this week from the Mountain Travel Research Program (MTRiP) show through May 31 reservations for mountain destinations across the western U.S. and Canada are down 15 percent compared to the same time last year (this is congruous with winter numbers).

"Although the booking trend appears to be consistent with last winter’s pattern, there is still some evidence that consumers are slightly more upbeat about future prospects,” said Ralf Garrison, author of the monthly report that tracks data from a sample of 216 property management companies in 15 mountain destination communities including Tahoe.

"Even though economic fundamentals remain bleak, economic indicators have been edging upwards for the past several months and seem to be generating some optimism in the future."

Good news: Reservations made in May for arrival in May through October were up 9.3 percent the report said.

Nationally, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI), which has risen four times in the past seven months, has risen from an all-time record low of 25 points in February to 54.9 points by the end of May, an increase of 119.6 percent.

Good news for Tahoe: Typical summer travel patterns for mountain visitors include more trips closer to home (Bay Area, Sac, SoCal).

"Summer vacations (to mountains) may be a good fit for budget-conscious travelers and perhaps an easier sell as a result,” Garrison said.

TRPA ho, hey, ho: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Stateline — big summer agenda this time round:

Buoys, buoys, buoys: The greenest (as in inexperienced, not eco-friendly) board in the agency's 40-year history will try to streamline the buoy-getting process (more than 1862 NEW buoys are permitted in the new Shorezone Plan). ...League to Save Lake Tahoe is trying to stall the process by making sure all homeowners get BMP certificates (?! — we don't really 'get it either' what BMPs have to do with buoys...) ...sounds like a filibuster; but that's why we go to the meetings — so you don't have to.

"Bringing all existing buoys into conformance with environmental standards is a big first step that needs to happen quickly so we can identify unauthorized buoys and begin Lake Tahoe’s buoy enforcement program," said TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan. "The streamlined process proposed by TRPA staff does not reduce any requirements for buoys, rather it gives buoy owners additional time to bring all the pieces together for full compliance."

Honoring Stu: When Obama plucked Harry Reid spawn (Josh) to fill the presidential seat, the board's (then) most-tenured/Bush appointee Yount said he always prided himself in "leaving politics at the door — I worked with both sides on issues. The bottom line was to protect the lake. I know the new (board members) care very much. But they're going to have to get caught up quickly).
