Special Election today is wack - Part I
Truckee
Tahoeticker welcomes its newest contributor, Beth Ingalls.
Ingalls, a Truckee resident since 1995, is a freelance writer and producer, activist, Founding Director of the Truckee Climate Action Network and mother of three sons.
She served as Truckee’s Mayor in 2006, at the end of her four year term as a Town Councilmember.
During her tenure, she focused on “greening” the town’s programs and policies, creating the first permanent Recycling Coordinator position, establishing the Green Building Committee, working on open space and conservation issues, and Chairing the Nevada County Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission.
Ingalls spends the majority of her time now writing and working on climate issues, and is looking forward to contributing to tahoeticker!
If the arrival of absentee ballots and voter information guides has you scratching your head, you’re not alone.
When Sacramento legislators finally cut a budget deal in February after months of painstaking debate and bitter wrangling, they left a lot on the table for voters to decide in a special election on May 19, namely an array of six complex and controversial propositions.
Simplistic analysis holds that approval of the measures will ensure the state’s ability to creep along for another year under the weight of an $8 billion deficit which is growing larger every day, while rejection will throw California into a state of complete and utter chaos.
One thing seems certain: We’re screwed either way.
Normally, a confounded voter faced with the convoluted wording and rationale of ballot measures can get his bearings by simply researching the positions of political parties and key interest groups.
In the case of measures 1A-1F, this strategy might just lead to even greater uncertainty.
For example, even though key republicans tied their support of the budget package to the special election, the California Republican Party is officially opposed to the props.
Leading the charge and steadfastly bucking party trends, Governor Schwarzenegger is, in his own words, “campaigning day and night for passage of the measures.”
Luckily, he has allies in Democratic leaders Karen Bass and Darrell Steinberg, who are traveling up and down the state as outspoken advocates.
They must have felt abandoned and alone when their own Democratic Party voted to oppose 1A-1F at their annual meeting in Sacramento several weeks ago.
With our education system reeling from cuts and layoffs, you’d think a check on the teachers unions might shed some light.
Not so.
The California Federation of Teachers is against, while the California Teachers' Association has given the measures two thumbs up.
Several prominent organizations that often walk in lock-step, are also surprisingly at odds.
The California League of Conservation Voters encourages yes on all the propositions, but the League of Women Voters is neutral on 1B, has no position on 1F, and firmly opposes the rest.
