And yes ...the KB roundabouts were originally scheduled to be complete this summer

Staff Report -

Kings Beach

Long-suffering proponents of redeveloping the Kings Beach commercial district with roundabouts and a pedestrian-friendly three-lane roadway have ridden a five-year roller coaster ...and, finally got their way Wedensday.

A grueling/haven't-we-been-here-before eight-hour TRPA marathon resulted in the unanimous adoption of the three-lane roundabout redevelopment plan as well the certification of its EIS.

Perhaps no more than any other development issue of contention in the Basin, the simple redo of the lakefront community's downtown with one fewer lane, wider pedestrian/bike lanes and roundabouts instead of traffic signals, has pitted old-line thinking vs. imperical evidence.

...And yes, some heavy community hitters with deep pockets (think those who back Wooden Boat-themed restaurants) commissioned community studies (and community leaders) to gerrymander support against a reimagining of Kings Beach's downtrodden downtown.

...Wednesday, they were rebuffed for the last time.

So convincing, in fact, that in June of 2008, a similar plan to redevelop Kings Beach was temporarily defeated. An emergency re-vote called by the board's then elder statesman, the late Jerry Waldie, brought the issue back to the fore.

Back then, the project was to have been completed by the summer of 2010.

Warring community groups have spent the 24 months since trying to work out hto keep traffic from cutting through the Kings Beach "grid" neighborhood should the downtown redevelopment plan happen.

Community meetings in that time have resulted in everythng from tears to shoving matches to one arrest for disorderly conduct.

"It's done," said TRPA chairman Alan Biaggi after meekly ending the nine-hour meeting. "It's done."
