All the world's a stage Part VII - Blocking

By Angi Weiss-Brandt -

Editor's Note: Tahoeticker presents an all-access look at the behind-the-scenes of the 37th season of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. The festival starts July 11 and runs through Aug. 23. Blog posts from cast, crew and staff will be featured twice-weekly. For part VI click here. For playbill and ticket information, click here.

The phase after table work is called blocking.

We stage managers have measured the plans for the set and laid down different colors of tape to represent the stage.

This gives the actors a good idea where the walls and stairs are. It shows them windows, doors, entrances and the like. Next the director tells the actors where to move to inside the scene. I keep track in my script of where everyone moves — and how they get there.

This is blocking. It's important to keep a record of where everyone is during the show for myriad reasons.

The costumers need to know where the actor is going to exit so they can be in the right place to do quick changes, the crew needs to know so the props can be in the right place.

I need to know so I can call light and sound when the actors say or do the cues.

Blocking takes a bit of time.

Last week we did part one.

Part one is everything that happens before intermission.

Shakespeare wrote plays in five acts so part one usually ends somewhere in the middle of act three.

In other words, we are about half way through. We tried to go roller skating on our day off yesterday, but it is not yet open for the summer. So we went to a huge outdoor mall, which was fun.

We have one more week here in Reno before we move to the lake. Today is an exciting day because we find out where we are living when we move! Hooray!
